About Me

Hi, my name is Tim Owen!

I’ve been performing and teaching on the saxophone, flute and clarinet since 1990, and since 2005 I’ve been with the U.S. Army bands, performing all over the world. Before coming to Washington, I was the saxophone instructor at the Army School of Music in Virginia Beach, working with dedicated musicians who wanted to serve their country through music. Now, I am stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, performing with the I Corps Army Band throughout the state of Washington.

Before joining the Army I completed my Bachelor and Master of Music degrees at Brigham Young University, working with Dr. Ray Smith, Daron Bradford, and Bill Holman, and Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Iowa, where I studied with Matthew Sintchak, Patrick Jones, and Kenneth Tse. Along the way I’ve had the chance to work with some outstanding musicians like Wayne Bergeron, Lou Rawls, Kitty Margolis, Ken Peplowski, Carla Bley and Steve Swallow. In addition to performing in all the required recitals and concerts, I won concerto competitions at both schools, performing the Dubois Concerto with the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra and the Muczynski Concerto with the University of Iowa Symphonic Band.

As the saxophone instructor for the Army, I worked with students with a wide variety of backgrounds, from those who had just graduated from high school to professionals and doctoral candidates. I helped them improve their playing in both jazz and classical styles, and in particular I helped them develop the ability to connect with audiences while having a great time on stage. The only catch: I only had seven weeks to work with them, so I had to get them going quickly for them to succeed!

I understand that it’s a challenge trying to make music a part of your busy life. You may not want to go to boot camp to play the saxophone, but you can benefit from the experience I have in teaching in a highly compressed schedule. Plus, we can dive deep into the things that matter most to you. I look forward to getting to know you and helping you along your musical journey!
