Private lessons with Dr. Marissa Manthongkham

A native of Memphis, TN, music has always been an integral part of Dr. Manthongkham’s life. She has studied with Guy Yehuda, Richard Shanley, Victor Chavez and Gary Sperl. Her dynamic, versatile performances have catapulted her career. A recent component of her scholarly work includes a performance tour of seven chamber music concerts in Kolkata, India, where she coached students from various backgrounds and collaborated with Indian educators. She also performed an LGBTQ rendition of Orpheus and Euridice by Ricky Ian Gordan with the Arbor Opera Theater of Michigan, allowing her to expand her insight of a well-known work in a modern setting. She has performed and collaborated with established composers and conductors including John Mackey, Paul Dooley, Eric Ewazen, Kensho Watanabe and Colonel John R. Bourgeois. Dr. Manthongakham has performed in masterclasses for renowned pedagogues Kenneth Grant, Julie Deroche, Phil Paglialonga, Frank Morelli, Kimberly Fisher and Paul Cigan. Marissa has won countless talent awards for her clarinet performance at preliminary competitions within Miss America Scholarship Organization and earned more than $9,000 in scholarships.

An avid advocate for music education, Dr. Manthongkham is passionate about clarinet instruction and pedagogy. She has over 12 years of education experience, including teaching at the Michigan State University Community Music School and teaching undergraduate courses and lessons at Baylor University. She volunteered as a clarinet instructor at The Joy of Music School, a non-profit organization that provides free lessons and equipment for youth in Knoxville, TN. As resident artist at the 2017 Philadelphia International Summer Music Festival, she coached chamber ensembles, studied with Ricardo Morales and served as principal clarinet of the college/professional division orchestra. She is a recent graduate of Michigan State University, earning a Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. Dr. Manthongkham also holds a BM Education degree from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville and MM Performance degree form Baylor University. She is thrilled to continue her passion for teaching and pedagogy at Ted Brown Music.
