About Rusty

Rusty Graeff has been teaching at Ted Brown Music since 2011. He first performed on guitar at age 10 and within the next few years began playing bass guitar and tuba. By junior high he was playing guitar and drums in bands outside of school while developing an interest in classical music as a member of Curtis’ exemplary orchestra. He attended Western Washington University and studied the tuba with Dr. Carla Rutschman. For this he earned a music performance degree in 2009. While at WWU he also worked closely with Chuck Israels, a jazz bassist known for his work with John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, and the Bill Evans Trio. Rusty studied jazz improvisation, history, and arranging with Israels while playing guitar in the school’s top jazz ensembles. His arrangements have been performed by WWU jazz bands before and since his graduation. He has taken lessons from guitarists Dave Peterson (Cornish), Steve Brown (Ithaca), and John Stowell.

Rusty strongly believes in tailoring instruction to each student’s interests and goals and developing a unique curriculum for every individual. Skills taught may include sight-reading, tablature, chords, strumming, ear-training, etc. Common texts used are Hal Leonard Guitar Methods, Noad studies, and books published by Mel Bay. All styles and levels of ability are welcome!
