About Emi

Emi Ostrom graduated from Oberlin Conservatory with a BM in Oboe Performance and BA in Neuroscience, then completed a master’s in Solo Voice Ensemble Singing at the University of York, in northern England. Her principal teachers are Robert Walters (solo English hornist of the Cleveland Orchestra), Kathryn Montoya (internationally acclaimed baroque oboist), and Robert Hollingworth (founder of the British-based vocal ensemble I Fagiolini).

Emi has given solo recitals in the US, UK, Canada, Switzerland and Japan. She moved to Seattle in 2017, and during the 2017-18 season performed as oboist with Seattle Bach Choir, Pacific Baroque Orchestra (Vancouver, BC), Seattle Rock Orchestra, Seattle Festival Orchestra, New Music on the Rock (Whidbey Island), Vashon Chorale, Bellevue Eastside Chorus, and Evan Flory Barnes’s jazz orchestra.

She founded her own professional a cappella group, Les Chanterelles, in May 2017, and also started singing with a number of professional choirs, including the St James Cathedral Cantorei, St James Women’s Schola, Tacoma Early Music Ensemble, and Emerald Ensemble.

Emi believes in giving students a well-rounded education, including a good foundation in classical technique as well as music theory and cultural/historical context. She encourages students to make their own reeds, write and arrange their own music. Aside from her work at Ted Brown, she coaches oboe students at Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra and teaches piano, music theory and voice for Seattle’s Associated Recreation Council.
