Nel Jacobs is a clarinetist from Northwest Florida. She is a current student at The University of Washington, where she studies Communication and will be playing in the UW Campus Band beginning Fall 2024.
From a young age, Nel has been surrounded by music. Most of her childhood was spent on stage with her grandparents at various bluegrass festivals and venues across the Southeast. It wasn’t until the age of 13 when she purchased her first clarinet that she found her musical footing. During her early high school years, she was part of various marching and symphonic bands, quartets, and jazz ensembles throughout Northwest Florida. She also proudly sat first chair bass clarinet in a regional Honor Band. To this day, she still enjoys playing most anything composed by Frank Ticheli and Gustav Holst.
Nel has studied music education at Northwest Florida State College, and has had the great privilege of gaining practicum teaching experience observing and assistant directing the Fort Walton Beach High School Band during classroom rehearsals. Drawing from her teaching mentors, David Norona of Florida State University and Nick Efstathiou of Troy State University, Nel believes in creating a lesson environment in which her students feel comfortable enough to ask questions, and to learn and grow as musicians. She considers it an honor to share her knowledge with others.
