Kyra is a graduate of the University of Washington and has been teaching flute and piano in both the public and private forums for more than 25 years. She comes from a family of music educators and began piano lessons at the age of 5, flute lessons at 8, and became a percussionist at 11; when her father was short a mallet player in his ‘young percussionists’ performance ensemble. She continued with all three instruments throughout most of her life which has given her the opportunity to play with a variety of diverse groups.
Kyra has played with concert bands and orchestras from Berkley, Santa Clara and San Jose under noted conductors such as Charles Yates and Frederick Fennell. She has accompanied various instrumentalists for solo/ensemble Festival since 1979, and played in dozens of pit bands for plays, operettas – even a fusion band and an Irish folk band!
Her piano training comes from many classically trained pianists from the Bay Area, the most prominent being Mabel Clark, a piano performance graduate of Portland University. Kyra started flute at an early age and by the time she was in High School she was taking from a prominent Bay Area flautist, Margaret Cook, who was a graduate of Paris Conservatory of Music in Paris, France. Kyra was fortunate enough to be invited to Master Classes by World renowned Flautists Julius Baker and Ranson Wilson.
Kyra has taught many students over the years and still finds it challenging and rewarding. “Learning a musical instrument is a skill that is enriching and meaningful”.
